Counselling Philosophy

People sometimes undergo stress that interferes with their everyday lives or interferes with their desire to achieve goals that they previously thought were impossible. Counselling can provide you with support, fresh perspectives, opportunities for learning new skills, and a safe environment for expressing your feelings. From my training and experience, I find working from a combination of solution-focused, cognitive-behavioural, and family systems approaches most helpful. What this means to you, is that I work collaboratively with you on problems that you identify as problems, and work with you to find solutions that are satisfactory to you. I often provide handouts or articles that I believe will support our counselling work. I will sometimes ask you questions that challenge your thinking, help you gain insight, or help you see things from a different perspective. Additionally, I may ask you about your key relationships and sequences of events that contribute to your experiences. There is no obligation to commit to a predetermined number of sessions. The frequency and number of sessions are completely up to you. Many clients feel better after only a few sessions while others prefer to receive the benefits of additional sessions.

New Trends in Counselling

I see the usefulness of counselling over a wide spectrum. At one time, people went to a counsellor for a major problem or crisis or when things had gotten to a very bad place. Sometimes people felt ashamed or embarrassed that they weren’t able to solve all of their problems on their own. From a skills based perspective, I like to remind people that if we weren`t taught how to parent, communicate in relationships, manage stress, or have time to practice these skills, how can we be expected to do them automatically and to deal effectively with a problem when it arises. Thankfully this shame-based view is changing. Counsellors are still very helpful to people during a crisis, and more and more people are starting to use counsellors to prevent problems from occurring. Additionally, people frequently use coaches or counsellors when they can say their life is fine, but they want it even better. Counsellors not only help people with skill development, but also help people get in touch with their emotions and help them tap into their own wisdom. As a consequence of these different views of counselling, many more people are talking about how much better they feel after talking to a counsellor.
