CITY OF TOTEMS

Duncan is about 45 kilometres from both Victoria to the south and Nanaimo to the north.

Duncan, often referred to as the “City of Totems,” is a charming community located in the Cowichan Valley on Vancouver Island, British Columbia, Canada. The city is known for its rich Indigenous heritage and is home to one of the largest collections of totem poles in the world. Visitors can explore the downtown area to discover these intricately carved totems, each telling a unique story and reflecting the cultural significance of the local First Nations. Duncan embraces its Indigenous roots, and the Quw’utsun’ Cultural Centre offers an immersive experience into the history, art, and traditions of the Cowichan Tribes.

Apart from its cultural richness, Duncan is surrounded by lush landscapes and outdoor recreational opportunities. The Cowichan Valley, with its rolling hills and fertile farmland, is a haven for agriculture and viticulture. The region is dotted with wineries, cideries, and farms, contributing to its reputation as the “Napa of the North.” Visitors can enjoy a mix of outdoor activities, including hiking, biking, and exploring the nearby Cowichan River. With its welcoming community, vibrant arts scene, and connection to Indigenous heritage, Duncan offers a delightful blend of cultural exploration and natural beauty on Vancouver Island.

It is often regarded as having more artistic merit than genre fiction, especially the most commercially-oriented types, but this has been contested in recent years, with the serious study of genre fiction within universities.
